What Type of Prostatitis
Treatment Is Available?

Prostatitis is the inflammation of the prostate. If you've had it you can understand why some might be asking what type of prostatitis treatment is available.

Even if you haven't heard of it until recently you would not believe how common this problem is. And to make matters worse it's somewhat of a mysterious condition that it is generally poorly understood. Sometimes being confused with BPH or enlarged prostate.

Terms to Know: It can be acute, chronic, chronic without infection or asymptomatic.

When the infection develops rapidly it is termed as acute and when it develops slowly it becomes chronic.

Here is the list of common prostatitis treatments applicable for all types.

In acute bacterial prostatitis swelling or enlargement may occur and pain develops in the prostate gland. It may be inflamed. Now this type of prostatitis can be caused by bacteria like E coli. And obvious symptom would be trouble urinating. Including starting, stopping, and frequency. And just when you thought it couldn't get any worse you could end up with a bladder infection.

In severe cases blood passes in the urine.

Luckily this type of prostatitis is curable with antibiotics. And I know. Every one likes it when a pill is the solution.

Generally broad spectrum antibiotics are given initially. If the bladder retains urine intravenous antibiotics may also be given. Plenty of fluids, rest and pain killers are also suggested during this stage of treatment.

When the bacterial infection is ongoing the disease is re-categorized as chronic. This type may not show any symptoms at all. It is more difficult to cure and a combination of antibiotics such as sulfa drugs, ciprofloxacin are prescribed

Chronic prostatitis without infection is another type of prostatitis where there is recurrent pain in the pelvis area but without any apparent infection. Here the treatment mainly consists of relaxation techniques, antidepressant medications, and physical therapy and alpha blockers to reduce the muscle tension.

Asymptomatic prostatitis has no symptoms and is generally treated with non steroid medications like ibuprofen.

Apart from these here are some other, what you might call…

Alternative Prostatitis Treatment Options

• Diet supplements like zinc, omega 3 fatty acids and cutting down on alcohol, smoking, caffeine and spicy food helps some suffers a lot.

• Others swear by Chinese medicines with herbs and honey, deep breathing methods and acupuncture techniques for relief.

• Hot baths and ice packs can reduce swelling and pain in the prostate.

• Balloon dilation which involves sending a collapsed balloon to clear the obstruction in the urethra when the p prostate is swollen also gives temporary relief.

• Rarely, in severe cases, surgery is an option which involves removal of the prostate gland.

• Stress is thought to aggravate this condition. So in some cases valium and other tranquilizers may also be given.

Obviously nothing can take the place of a face to face with your doctor. Whether you're discussing prostatitis treatment options or other medical conditions.
